1st Grade Projects
Here are some examples of the projects we might complete in 1st grade...
The first project of the year begins with an abstract study line collage. Students complete the project with marker color patterns
My Fat Cat Sat on a Mat
Its a classic! This project is about shape. Students draw a complex picture using simple shapes like ovals and circles and triangles. They fill in the shapes using water color to help describe and enhance the picture.

This is a quick project about composition. Each student is given a square piece of paper and black strips of paper. Students can arrange the black strips however they want and the different results in composition are awesome! Students fill the space with primary colors.
Secondary color still life-Students look at several examples of still lives and then use primary color oil pastels to create a secondary still life
Small, Medium, Large Landscape- Students show distance by placing small medium and large objects on a ground plain to show distance
Ms. Spiders Tea Party- an alternative Small Medium Large project
Overlapping Cityscape- Students create a cityscape that continues the idea of objects getting smaller as they go back in space and introduces the concept of overlapping objects creating a spatial relationship
Seascape- creating and illusion of space with line (continuing the idea of size and overlapping creating spatial relationships)
Self-Portrait- students identify and place body parts. I stress the idea of body part mass and shape
